About Me

meIn professional speak, I am a marketing manager with a keen focus on storytelling and social platforms. I’ve also been called a project manager, leader, and facilitator.

My 20 months as an MA/MBA Design Leadership candidate at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and Maryland Institute College of Art has surfaced something in me beyond the professional labels I carry. It might be my best moniker yet. I’m a designer.

I’m a designer, but I’m an unconventional one. I still possess drive to tell a good story and lead a team, but I view marketing through a different lens now. Before jumping into a marketing task with a hypothesis — or worse — a solution, I step back, breathe, and use a Design Thinking process to produce business solutions.

Design Thinking directs my process to the user first. I use its principles to observe, ideate, prototype, interview, and glean insight… just to start all over again. Through my work, this process applies most often to communications design, from honing in on a mission statement to designing an entire marketing campaign. I’ve also applied this process to organizational design, service design, experience design, and product design. In each field, it works. For each, I’ve included at least one example in my portfolio.

After graduating with B.A. in Journalism from American University, I stepped into the non-profit world for many years because I wanted my work in communications to have a social mission. I entered my advanced degree program believing it would help me spread my wings; land on something larger. I have, but that bigger thing is still socially-driven. It’s about designing for the human being.

As you will find, I’ve laid my design foundation across several specialties: entrepreneurship, education, health, and technology. I’m anxious to know where I can start the design process next.
